I’m trying to install the crawler on my Windows Home Server and am having issues with it running due to the fact that it’s not a service, but rather run as part of the users login scripts. In fact, this is an issue for any server environment. Obviously I can use 3rd party tools that will help to set it up as a service, but it makes sense to do this for all systems.

Yes, we are working on a new version of the Crawler which will act as a windows service. This is a popular request so it is a top priority for us.

It sounds like you are installing the Crawler on multiple systems. Usually the Crawler only needs to be installed on a single computer.

Actually I’m just trying to install the Crawler on one system in my home network, which just happens to be my Windows Home Server. I otherwise just have laptops which doesn’t make sense to install the crawler on. Taking that into account, what are the effects of installing the crawler on multiple machines? Will there be duplication of data, or will the data duplication automatically resolve itself (I’m guessing it will since it would just show up as additional data points).

I look forward to a service based crawler.

Thanks,
Joe
